Newlywed Couple Accused of Killing Groomsman With Vehicle on Wedding Night

A newlywed couple in Michigan has been accused of killing a groomsman with a vehicle on their wedding night.
On Thursday, the City of Flint Police Department in Michigan reported an incident that occurred on August 30 following a 911 call for a “pedestrian injury crash.”
“Upon arrival the victim was found to have severe injuries and was transported to Hurley Medical Center,” the City of Flint Police Department said.
The victim was later identified by police as 29-year-old Terry Lewis Taylor Jr. The victim was later pronounced deceased at a nearby hospital shortly after the incident.
In a post shared to Facebook, the City of Flint Police Department said that a further investigation into the incident revealed that the victim had attended a wedding as a groomsman just prior to the incident.
“After the wedding he was involved in an argument which led to him being intentionally struck by a large SUV that was travelling [sic] at a high rate of speed and driven by the groom,” the police department said in the post.
Following the incident, police arrested 22-year-old James Shirah, the groom in the wedding, and 21-year-old Savahna Collier, the wedding’s bride.
According to police, Shirah was arraigned and charged with second degree murder. He is currently being held in custody without bond. His bride, Collier, was also arraigned and charged with accessory after the fact to a felony. Collier’s bond was set at $4,000, police said.
The groom was allegedly driving the vehicle when it hit Taylor Jr., according to police.
On Thursday, the Genesee County public defender office said that there had yet to be an attorney assigned to the case.
Genesee County Prosector David Leyton, who is in his 20th year in the role, said: “I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”
“I’ve seen people running over other people but not so soon after a wedding,” Leyton said.
Referencing a police report of the incident, Leyton said that the wedding between Shirah and Collier was at a local pizzeria. However, an argument between the couple and the victim broke out at a residence following the wedding.
Taylor was standing in the street in front of the house when he was struck by the SUV, according to Leyton.
Leyton also noted that both the bride and the groom left the scene immediately after it happened. They did not report the incident to police until the next day, which Leyton said made it “more difficult to unravel what happened.”
