Established on November 21, 1941, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal honors United States military members who carried out occupation service in Germany of Austria-Hungary in the aftermath of World War I. To qualify, service must have taken place between November 12, 1918 and July 11, 1923.
The medal features the image of General John J. Pershing, with four stars on the upper portion and an inscription reading “GENERAL JOHN J. PERSHING” as well as a laurel wreath, a sword, and the dates “1918-1923.” The reverse of the medal features an eagle perched atop Germany’s Castle Ehrenbreitstein and an inscription reading “U.S. ARMY OF OCCUPATION OF GERMANY” with three stars appearing at the bottom of the medal. The ribbon is black and features one vertical white stripe, one thin red stripe, and one thin blue stripe proceeding outward to each edge.
