SUPERB WWI RESERVE MILITARY AVIATOR PILOT WING SCREW POST REVERSE EISENSTADT?
SUPERB WWI RESERVE MILITARY AVIATOR PILOT WING SCREW POST REVERSE EISENSTADT?
    Description
Presented for the collector of WWI aviation material or specialist collector of pilot's badges is this superb specimen of what is formally known as a "Reserve Military Aviator's Badge." This wing is in untouched, uncleaned, as-found condition with a wonderful patina. I've never encountered a wing of this pattern before, but it appears to bear some marked similarity to those made by Louis Eisenstadt of St. Louis, Missouri. A significant departure from the pinback feature of the Eisenstadt wings that I know of is the fact that the attachment of this specimen is of the screwback variety as employed by another famous maker of WWI aviation badges, the Linz Brothers firm also of St. Louis. Thus, I feel reasonably confident in assigning a St. Louis attribution to these wings. These full size wings are quite large measuring a little over 4 inches from tip to tip. The design elements feature the de rigueur chased wings and shield with an applied "US" in gold. The wings are highly vaulted in the shoulder area and this is evident when examining the reverse. The screw posts measure about 3/8 of an inch in length and feature the original brass nuts. These nuts exhibit some verdigris and tarnish commensurate with the rest of the wing. Underneath the tarnish the wing appears to have a "jewelled" design (overlapped circular abrasions) not unlike the bolt of hunting rifle or the gold leaf designs on some fire trucks, if you know what I'm talking about. This decorative element is sometimes found on the reverse of earlier fine jewelry items. Doubtlessly, this was created by a St. Louis jewelry firm (based upon construction characteristics) to order. This superb wing would complement any collection of WWI aviation badges or ephemera. Another fine wing from Brother Rabbit's hutch!
