    Description

    AUCTION INCLUDES
Collection of 8 vintage netsuke, plus book on the subject.
    DESCRIPTION
See 12 actual photos. Ebay limits photos to 12 but I do have many additional detail photos I can send to serious buyers. These items are from an estate. They were purchased several decades ago. I do not have the expertise to authenticate them, but hundreds of items sold from this estate have proved to be of fine quality. This lot does not contain contain any illegal or prohibited animal materials for sale.
    Photo 1: The full collection
Photos 2-4: Two signed wooden netsuke. Possibly boxwood. Detail of signatures on the back side shown. The signature on the mask suggests it is by the famous Noh mask maker Deme Joman from the mid 1800s. Sotheby's has sold netsuke by this maker. He is included in the book that is part of this auction lot. Mask is approximately 1.5 inches or 3.7 centimeters long. Second piece is kimono clad figure missing left big toe, about 1 5/8 inches or 4.2 centimeters long.
Photos 5-6: Scrimshaw-like figure carved into a piece of stag antler. This non-prohibited material is very much like other eBay lots of stag antler netsuke, which I suggest you look up and compare to see other examples of this medium and also since the prices are high on those. Though not signed (often netsuke were not), it is clearly identifiable as netsuke by the cord holes in back. 2 1/8 in. or 5.5 cm tall.
Photo 7: Two masks made of metal. The larger one is a much thicker metal and is about 2 1/16 in or 5.2 cm long. The thinner one is about 1 3/8 or 3.5cm wide.
Photos 8-11: Three signed pieces carved from celluloid. They could still be antique, as celluloid was invented around 1850 and came into use as substitute for the illegal material that eBay won't even allow me to name and I am not selling. The signatures should shed more light on when these were made. Photos 9-11 show the signatures in the same order as photo 8 from left to right. The leftmost piece (about 2 in. or 5 cm high) is of a large detailed head, intricately carved scroll hairdo, plus a small figure included at the bottom, missing his right hand. The second netsuke in photo 8 is a really cool skull with shiny iridescent inlaid irises. It is about 1 5/16 in. or 3.4 cm long. The third item in photo 8 is a crouching man with a mouse on his back, all carved in one piece. His staff is mostly intact but the top appears to have broken off. 1 5/8 in. or 4.2 cm.
Photo 12: Book -- "Netsuke: A Miniature Art of Japan" by Yuzuro Okada, 1951.
