    Description

1937 Irish Half Crown - in Very Good (i.e. well circulated) Condition
This auction is for a 1937 Irish Halfcrown in Very Good condition. It features a Horse (a Hunter) on the reverse, and a Harp, Saorstát
    é
ireann and Date on the obverse. Talk to any Irish child of the sixties and they will all have their favourite halfcrown story. This usually involves a favourite uncle and the first time they ever got a present of a halfcrown! First Communion money also featured half crowns - if you were lucky! They are substantial coins - larger than an American half dollar.
There were only 40,000 Irish half crowns minted in 1937 and is the second rarest Irish half crown. This was tiny figure for a population of less than 3 million at the time - there are now 5.0 million. Minted from 75% silver this halfcrown weighs 14.14 grams - same as the US half dollar. It is in VERY GOOD (i.e. well circulated) condition - but see the photos of the
    Actual Coin
in the auction and judge its condition for yourself! (NOTE the black dot on the "n" of "coroin" is a loose piece of dust!). It is the last one I have available. See also the other auctions for other silver Irish half crowns. These
silver coins were withdrawn from circulation in the late 1960s and melted down for their 75% silver content.
These much loved halfcrowns were demonetised on 31st December 1969 and withdrawn from circulation in 1970 prior to decimalisation in 1971. With 8 to the £1 they were not going to fit into a decimal system!
