1920s CANE W/ RETRACTABLE RULER, LEVEL, AUTOMOTIVE ? EQUESTRIAN? BONE HANDLE. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. here is one of the most unique items I have come across, and I'm still at a loss to determine exactly what this is. I have been told that this is an equestrian horse-related cane that allowed a horse to be measured, I have also been told that it is an automotive accessory, with a ruler to determine the depth of gasoline and a gas tank, and a swing out gapper with level period in any event, I am not sure what it is, and I'm hoping someone can help. The pull out brass yard stick has 4 inch increments, which would suggest "hands," a horse height measurement. This 36-in long leather-bound cane with a bone handle with a leather grip, has a brass or copper appendage that when pulled out from the case of the cane, has hash marks and measurements down the side, including 3-in increments. There is also another brass appendage that can be swung out and looks to have had perhaps a level at one time, and an odd attachment at the end that could be a spark plug gapper. There is no makers mark, the cane handle separates at the bone grip to reveal the long ruler or yardstick or measuring instrument, as well as the arm that swings out at a 90° angle. This is a very old cane, I would venture 1910 to 1920, based on the look of it. it is high quality, and again, either related to someone who would measure the height of a horse, or to determine the level of gas in a gas tank for an automobile, and looks to have some other type of purpose, perhaps for carpentry or gapping of spark plugs for an early car. please review photos. Any help anyone can offer would be much appreciated. This very unique early 36-in tall cane with removable yardstick, brass or copper, with a retractable arm with amount for perhaps a level will make a wonderful addition to any early equestrian, horse related measurement or yardstick collection, automotive or early car or American automobile related work or repair memorabilia collection, or simply unique conversation piece related walking stick collection.
